  • Dieterlen G. Masks and mythology among the Dogon. African arts. 1989;22:34-43, 87-8.

The procession of Dogon masks that come out to perform during dama ceremonies, or the end of mourning, represent various aspects of Dogon cosmology, evoking personalities or events from mythology; collectively they are an "ensemble of the universe." Dieterlen discusses seven specific Dogon masks: pullo, the Fulani; walu, the antelope; satimbe; sa ku or azagay; dyonune, the healer; "old woman"; and samana, the "Samo." She considers "levels of speech" embodied in masks and in their performance, the associated oral traditions being one level of speech, the drum rhythms, another, and the bullroarer, yet another. This article was also published in French in the Journal des africanistes (Paris) 59 (1-2): 7-38, 1989.
